Have you ever been tempted to buy a pet store pup, even though you know it's wrong?
I was in a small pet store today to buy some plants for my pond, and they had four beautiful blue/fawn Chihuahua pups for sale. They were so tiny and cute that I was actually tempted to buy one!! They were 0.00,no papers, and 9 weeks old.One of them started sucking on my finger,so I questioned their actual age,but they were eating dry food and appeared to be in good shape. Of course I didn’t buy one – but I WAS tempted. Have you ever been tempted even though you know it would be morally wrong?
Thank God I’m not the only one!! They were just SO cute, but there is no way that I would buy one. I buy my plants there because the other pet store that doesn’t sell puppies doesn’t carry pond plants.
Joel – Most of the puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills or backyard breeders.I know for a fact that this store gets their pups from Ohio’s Amish Country – aka Puppy Mill Central. Yes,they will take mixed breed "accidental " litters and kittens from private citizens to sell, but the purebreds and "designer" mixes are from puppy mills or BYBs.
Tawney – I have purchased sick turtles for the same reason, and I have lost a few,but I have saved more!Sometimes, your heart just overrides your brain!!
KaRayZee – Your dog is gorgeous! You live in Cleveland, then? Don’t you just love Dick Goddard? He is such a wonderful friend to animals.
Edit: Yes,Chetco,it would be more ethically than lorally wrong.
Also,to be fair, this pet store does take good care of their puppies, at least. They have a fenced area in the back and kennels with roofs, and on nice days the puppies are all outside for air and sunshine. The little Chis were in a large playpen. They also had their huge sulcata tortoises ( owner is a rabid chelonian fan),their Bullmastiff and their Giant Schnauzer running around out there.Plus, they vaccinate and worm the pups and kittens and take them to the same vet I go to when they get a sick animal. They feed Premium Edge dog food and Royal Canin Cat food. So even though the pups come from seedy breeders, they are taken care of once they are in the pet store.Still,I couldn’t in good conscience buy one.
KaRayZee – I don’t blame you! I would love to live in the country.
