Potty training our chihuahua when we aren't home much?
We recently adopted a chihuahua, about 9 months old, from a woman who was moving. She claimed the dog was potty-trained which was important to me since I don’t really have the patience or expertise to handle that myself.
Now that we’ve had Jumbo for about 3 weeks, it is very apparent that he isn’t even CLOSE to being housebroken. He has totally ruined the brand new carpet in the kids’ room and also does #1 and #2 downstairs on the hard floor.
He is home alone during the day; he can’t have run of the house so he stays in the hall bathroom (nice size) with his bed, puppy pad, food & water and is let out immediately when we get home. He will then potty outside, but it seems that he saves some (?!) for inside as well!
Not one day goes by that he isn’t messing in the house. I waited years to get a dog for this very reason. I read that we should take him out frequently but we’re not home enough to do this. He is such a sweetie but the accidents are killing me. Should I give him up?
