We have a very sweet little short hair black chihuahua about 12 months old, she just had her spaying surgery done one week ago. She just took her last Novox pill yesterday. Seems to be recovering extremely well from the surgery, in fact she’s been absolutely sweet as a doll from the very day we picked her up after the surgery – no scratching or chewing at the incision, sleeping great, resting alot (especially after taking Novox each day), eating light but steady, drinking water fine, urinating and #2 seem fine also. The incision area looks pretty good, don’t see any redness or swelling or anything odd (thank god). BUT… Here is the only odd thing we noticed with her – the last day or 2 she has gotten a little ‘snippy’ all of a sudden. Kind of like irratable or ‘crabby’ – not often, but mostly around feeding time (growling/snapping if anyone/anything gets near her food type of stuff), and if we give her a cookie she’ll take it and stuff it under her body, go lay down with it, and then if the other dog comes near her & her little cookie she growls really mean at the other dog, like the next threat will be a bite or snip, u can just tell. Gets a real mean face on her during these times too. Its almost funny only because she is about as big as a french baguette, only weighs probably 4 lbs soaking wet. She is so tiny, and like I said, she never acted like that in the last few months we’ve had her – always willing to tolerate the other dog (other dog is a really old, on his last legs, 16 yr old Shitzu, totally non-aggressive, all that dog does is sleep 23.5 hrs a day now, poor thing, hearing and eyes getting bad, all the usual stuff with dogs in their final part of life. I am thinking that either the chihuahua is coming "off" the painkiller pills possibly, and either in a bit of pain now which she didn’t feel before, or maybe the actual hysterectomy surgery causes some hormonal or psycological/behavioral changes in some female dogs ? Not sure. Has anyone ever encountered this with dogs after spaying ? Thanks for any ideas.
