How do I train this puppy?
Hi everyone! I need help! Ok, I have 2 male Chihuahua pups, Paco and Muppet. I have had them since birth, they are brothers, and are now 5 months old. I started out "paper training" the whole litter of puppies, but as they found new homes, I started taking my boys outside to do their business, and weaning them off of the paper. Low and behold, they one day started using my cat’s litter box! We were doing fine for a while, but Muppet still was having occasional accidents outside of the litter box. Now, he won’t use it at all! Still using the floor. It is always the same spot every time. I have bleached the floor, used ammonia, bought oder remover from the pet store, everything I can think of to make him choose somewhere else to go, or to go in the litter box, as the spot he has picked is right in front of the last step on our stairs! I take him out as much as I can off and on throughout the day, but he still manages to hit the floor at least once a day. I even had to take my Christmas tree skirt and presents up out from under the tree because they have picked the tree skirt as the pee spot! Can someone help me out with some suggestions here? Paco is doing just fine with the litter box, and he goes outside with Muppet everyday. What else can I do? How do I get sweet little Muppet back on track? Thank you in advance!
PS> Have you ever heard of 2 brother dogs being sexually attracted to each other? Muppet was "all out" the other day! It was after him and Paco were humping each other. Kinda freaked me and him out! lol Poor little thing looked at me like "What did I do wrong?"
The detailed answer may be the most informative, but K, yeah, Ammonia. Although I have already tried bleach and a diluted bleach solution. This morning when he got up (he is my son’s puppy and sleeps upstairs with him) and came downstairs, we cuddled as usual, and I kinda just mumbled to myself "please don’t pee in the floor today buddy, just go use the box or tell me you need to go out ok?", and then we went to go out. We passed the litterbox on the way and I thought "hey, why not try one more time?" So I asked Muppet if he needed to go Pee and told him to go get in the box and pee. He looked back and me and low and behold the little devil went and climbed in the box and Did his business, both!!! Oh my word, I was so happy I started clapping and praising as much as I could and grabbed the nearest thing I could to give him for a treat (it just happened to be a few pieces of dry cat food. At the moment, anything would have worked for me.) No accidents for the rest of the day. Who knows?
Chihuahua Crate Training Questions?
I have a 10 week old chihuahua that I recently bought from a breeder (who is out of town at the moment) and I had a couple questions I was hoping someone here could answer.
1. How often should I get him out and play with him?
2. How long should I play with him before he goes back in?
3. How long before he is considered trained? He uses the litter box every time without even being led there and has had no accidents yet (knock on wood).
4. When can I expand his allowed area? He has a good sized area, but I don’t want to overwhelm him by giving him too much room too soon.
Thanks in advance.
Advice on training a chihuahua puppy!?
I’m getting my puppy in about 5 weeks(she was born a week ago). I live in an apartment and work 7-8hrs a day and cant be there to let her out to go potty. I have heard lots of ways to potty train them on pee pee pads and litter boxes and other stuff. I just want to know your experiences in a similar situation. I think I may put the pads in a litter box and train her in that. but im not sure yet. does anyone have any suggestions or advice! only serious answers please!
…ok, first of all…The puppy IS going to be 8 weeks when i get her.(I miss calculated). second, The mother is my moms chi and there were only 2 pups born and 1 passed. So she wont miss out on socializing with her litter mates, she doesnt have any! Im not looking for ANYONES input on when i should get her or how i should treat her. I Have had chi’s before, so I know their temperment. Then ONLY question I have is What is the best way to potty train her. In the past I lived with my mom and someone was always home so outside potty training works. But as I say I WORK 7-8 hrs a day and CANT take her with me. and I have no one to come and let her out. once again ONLY Serious, no judgmental answers PLEASE!
AND I AM A ALL AROUNG ANIMAL LOVER AND CHIHUAHUAS ARE MY FAV BREED! I RESPONSIBLE OWNER AND DO NOT WANT HER A A TOY! AS SOME HAVE SUGGESTED!!!
AND…she will be in a baby play pen while I am at work! so she will have a litter pan with pee pee pads in it on one side and her bed and toys and food and water on the other.
What would be the best way to house train a Chihuahua?
I have had larger dogs before but I have never had such a small dog and the one that I plan on buying is a toy. Could anyone help me? Could I use a litter box? I assume that they will have to go more often.
have you had trouble potty training you chihuahua?
so my 2 chihuahuas for the most part always use their potty pads or go out side but sometimes expectially my male and plastic bags, he will go right in front of me like he doesnt care, and he knows its bad. i have started kenneling when at work and that has helped alot. any chihuahua owners have word of advice? No offense but please have or have had a chihuahua because if you have you would know how different they are from other breeds thank you!
i have a 15 month male(more of a problem) and a 20 month old female, i tired the litter box and they wouldnt have anything to do with it but potty pads work for them most of the time being key words. but so far ur answers are great, i do disipline and put them in the bathroom when i catch them lol because they think they’re getting a bath then too
Help litter training my chihuahua..please!?
It just doesn’t seem to be working–she won’t go in the box and now won’t even go outside. She holds it until she is unsupervised and then goes wherever she pleases…I tried leaving her in the bathroom covered in puppy pads along with the box, but she will find the ONLY uncovered area and go there.
I’ve read all the theories about litter training and I’m confused….which method is best?
1) Put her in a small crate with just enough room for her and the litter box and leave her in there all day instead of in her normal crate thus FORCING her to use the box.
2) Keep her in her sleeping crate and physically take her to the box when she might have to go? The whole "just take her to the box 20 minutes after she eats" thing doesn’t work… she has good will power–i might be sitting there holding her in the box for hours.
3) Tie her to me on a leash and put her in the box when she starts to go on the floor?
What should my next step be? Help!

Preparing to purchase a chihuahua?
I need some guidelines on what to expect, mainly. Let’s Begin:
1. Yes, I’m fully aware that it is better to adopt or rescue. I have always rescued my dogs/animals before, but I am ready to have just one from a reputable breeder because I want a chihuahua.
2. Here is my situation: I am going to be moving in with either one or two roommates in August or September. I will (hopefully) have the job that I am looking to receive. This job is at a dog grooming salon and catering business. If I do not get this job, this means that I cannot take my pup to work with me. This means she will be left alone for my shift, but I will come home at lunch time. Is this okay?
3. I am buying a crate, but I am NOT crate training. The crate will stay in the family room as her "den" so that she has someplace to go if she gets tired or fed up with people. However, the puppy’s "space" is going to be in a closet that is about the size of a bathroom. I am putting a baby gate up at the doorway, NOT closing the door. In this room, she will have her bed, food dishes, toys, and her litter box. (I’ll get to that later). I will be placing her in this room at night time and when we are not at home.
4. Yes, I am litter box training my dog. Since I will be living in an apartment complex and the winters get below 0, I believe this is best for a chihuahua. I have done all of my research, and am hoping this will work out suitably.
5. I am not sure about feeding. What times should I feed her? How many times should I feed her? How much should I feed her? What is the best type of puppy food? How about the best type of dog food when she matures? (I have done research on this as well, I have just heard so many different things!) Should she have a feeding schedule when potty training? If so, what should it look like?
6. About treats: What kind of treats are best for training? What about potty training? Will it mess up the feeding schedule?
7. I have a breeder lined up. I THINK I know that she is reputable, however, like I’ve said, I have never done this before. She has ten females and two males. I recently visited her home and there are no kennels, they are kept indoors AND outdoors. (Indoors if it is not nice out, outdoors if it is). All her puppies are raised indoors and are socialized with her five children and with her bigger dogs, as well as with horses and other farm animals. She had 3 litters when I visited, all at different ages. Her pups come with a one year health warranty, first shots, deworming, and a contract saying that the pup will be returned if you no longer want it. She does not give her pups up until they are at least 10 weeks of age. She answered all of my questions without getting angry or impatient. She asked me questions as well. Her pups all looked very healthy and had clean living conditions. Some advice for me from people who have done this before please?
Thank you to all who answer! Please answer if you have experience with chihuahuas and/or breeders. I have done so much research! I have a notebook practically filled with ideas and tips on training, grooming, health issues, etc. of chihuahuas. Just had some questions. Thanks again.
Marie: Thank you for your advice. However, I am litter training my dog. If you actually looked it up, it is better for potty training small dogs. It is not laziness. This is so it will not have to hold it while I am gone or asleep. I am fully aware that it is a dog, not a toy. I am fully aware that it needs to go on walks daily. I’m going to do this. However, if you would look up litter training dogs, instead of just being rude about voicing your opinion, you would see that it is actually a very good alternative.
About the breeder: I know about puppy mills, and she does have quite a few dogs. However, all of her dogs were in great shape physically and were very friendly. Does this mean anything?
