What human food are okay for dogs like a chihuahua/terrier to eat?
I’ve seen my parents feed my chihuahua/terrier (he’s a mix of a chihuahua and terrier) corn, apples, and pears, and I was just wondering if the food that they’re giving him are safe for my dog’s health. And if yes, what other food may be acceptable for him to consume?
How can I convince my parents to spay our pup?
In February, we got an adorable 2 month old Chihuahua from a breeder. Her name is Lola. My parents are pretty against neutering/spaying, especially my dad. He calls it "mutilation" and "against nature". We have a seven y/o male Chihuahua, Tito, who isn’t neutered (and probably never will be). Anyways, so as Lola grew we noticed she was kinda smaller than usual. Tito is a big Chihuahua (about 10 lbs). Though Lola’s young, she’s small for her age (she weighs in at a whopping 2.4 pounds). She turned 1 y/o today.
My mom recently moved to Paraguay (South America) and took Lola with her. Before she went, I made my mom promise to get Lola fixed (esp. because in Paraguay there are a LOT of stray dogs and she could easily get pregnant). A few weeks ago, she went to a vet who told her Lola is very small and will probably remain so. She said she’s a "Type One" Chihuahua, which is the smallest kind, and can basically never have kids because her body can’t support it. I could understand, cause Lola is about the size of a puppy herself. I spoke to my mom and she said she would get her spayed soon.
Today, she called and said that she went to another vet and the vet told her not to get Lola fixed. The vet apparently was like "Oh no! Don’t fix her! I’ll pay you 00 for her! She’s so cute; she should definitely have puppies!" So of course my mom buys into it and agrees not to get her fixed (she didn’t sell her or anything). Apparently, the vet promised that she would be there every step of the pregnancy and would stay with her for free during the labor and help her give birth to her puppies.
I was so upset I started crying. I am absolutely sure that Lola cannot carry puppies, let alone birth them. I think this second vet isn”t very legit and shouldn’t be telling my mom that. Now my dad agrees and they’re not getting her spayed.
How can I tell my mom that it is absolutely necessary for Lola to get spayed? She weighs like 3 pounds! My parents are stubborn. I’ve told them that she’ll die and they just brush that off as me being paranoid. The first vet was right and I know it! Help!
Sorry this is so long :/
Okay, thank you to everyone who contributed. Really appreciate the support.
But Cocomookie, I cannot believe you would dare to even think that, never mind have the nerve to type that out. Actually, my parents and I are Hispanic, and that has NOTHING to do with this problem. I hope you think twice before making a comment like that again.
Also, I just want to add that if by some miracle she does have puppies, I know my parents will take very good care of them. Its not the life of the puppies I’m worried about, its Lola!
But thank you everyone so much for your information, and support! I’m not giving up yet!
Is it bad for humans to feed their dogs table scraps?? I have a pup and my folks will be watching him?
So I have this pup……….she’s 9 weeks old. Right now we have her on wet dog food and give her a few treats now and then. Its difficult at times between getting her house trained, getting her used to a leash, and then the next problem will be getting her to switch from wet to dry dog food….(I bought halo, do dogs like that stuff??)
My parents have 4 children. Two of them are grown (im one of them, hehe) and thennnn they have two teenagers. The teenagers each have dogs, who are for the most part well behaved……..EXCEPT when it comes to food….my dad will be eating lunch (pretty much every day im sure this happens) and the dogs (mainly the huge fat Chihuahua, and once in a while the sweet lab that came from the pound) will just STARE AT MY DAD………so rudely…..and then my dad will throw scraps down……and the dog will RACE OVER TO EAT IT…….and the dogs will fight almost even if he throws two scraps down for them……..I think it is so tacky………(and im not trying to be rude with my capslock folks
Im just peeved….
So what are some good reasons I can tell my folks to PLEASE NOT give my pup any human food??? Right now, whenever we eat, she never bothers us for our human food, and I think thats the way it ought to be…but over at my parents………when the dogs stare..I feel like theres this poor starving being that will die if it doesnt eat, and ‘there I am’ just feasting away.
So far my reasons are:
1.) She’s on wet food, and it will already be hard enough (maybe) to get her on to dry food, I dont want any more complications.
2.) I think its rude when animals try to stare you down to get some food.
3.) Its unhealthy (I dont have back up ideas on this, it just seems plausible)
4.) I already have enough hardships trying to get her to not pooh and pee in the house, we are working on training her.
and what else????
I REALLY dont want to use the ol’…………"look at your dogs, I dont want mine to end up like them" routine… no one likes that when it comes to children/teenagers/ or animals
and PS: Yes, my parents will listen, they’re not the kind that need reasons, I just want to assure them that it should only be one way for my dog. I am the owner. And she shouldnt feed anything I dont want her to have. So far I told everyone in my family not feed her ANYTHING at all or I will be p*ssd off……….my dad wasnt there at the time, and then yesterday, he goes…"Oh do you feed her table scraps/left overs" and just replied that we dont ever have any, and that we’ve been eating light…
Grawwwrrr!!
Dog eats catfood?
I have 3 dogs. 2 chihuahua/rat-terrier mixes and a terrier mutt. I give them each a certain amount of dog food per day. One of my chihuahua/rat-terriers always tries to get the cats food and he succeeds sometimes because one of my cats is very old and can’t jump high so we have to put his food on the floor. If my dog eats cat food should I still feed him dog food that day? Please help, this is really frustrating me because I tell my parents to close the doors to where the cat food is but they always forget.
the room with the cat food in it is usually closed until our cat asks to go in but my parents always seem to forget to close the door no matter how many times I tell them to. When my dog gets the cat food I scold him and he gets mad at me and growls. He’s such a brat.
I know it’s bad for dogs to eat catfood, that’s why I’m so frustrated. We have gates but, believe it or not, my dog jumps over them.
He doesn’t have any problems with eating his regular dog food, he loves it, but still wants the cat food
our oldest cat has F.I.P. and can’t move around very well which is why his cat food needs to be acessible to him. That’s why we keep the door closed until he stands by it.
I am the owner of a chihuahua that's about to turn 2 years old and I need some training advice!?
I paid a small re-homing fee and brought this chihuahua into my home at the end of January 2010. The owners that I purchased him from informed me that the dog only lived with them for about 4 months and that he was originally purchased for mating their female (since the male they already had wouldn’t). Apparently, the older male only needed some competition because the female birthed puppies that looked identical to the older male and, while the younger male didn’t pose a problem initially, the older male constantly attacked him once the puppies arrived. Therefore, they sought to find another home for the dog and this is where I came into the picture.
When I met with the owner, he informed me of a couple of things… The dog had apparently been abused by the previous owners (according to him…it may have been while in their household) and was very timid. He stated that the dog wouldn’t even come near him during the first 2 weeks in their home. He also stated that the dog was malnourished when they got him but they were progressing a little (horrible diet of human scraps if I may add…bowels smelled terrible and incredibly bulky). He also stated that the dog was purebred and AKC registered although he had no papers. I wasn’t really concerned about that; I just wanted a chihuahua really badly and would see that he was restored to good health.
Well, the timidness was obvious from day 1. He wouldn’t come anywhere near me but would reluctantly come to my sister; he warmed up to me after a couple of weeks. He was extremely frightened of strangers… when introduced to my parents he defecated while in my mother’s arm and still urinates til this day when scolded… I definitely believe the story of abuse (although I’m not sure from which family)….He has a strict diet of dog food and raw vegetables and has gained impressive weight. He also is much more sociable although he still dislikes strangers; instead of cowering, he barks and occassionally bites.
With everything being said, I still have some issues…. I realize that his urinating during nervousness or scolding stems from fear; is there anyway to get that under control and to an eventual stop? and what are correct ways of properly socializing him?
Can you train a chihuahua to like people?
Before anyone goes off on me, I know it’s my fault for not socializing her well enough when she was a puppy BUT I have a 2.5 year old female chihuahua who hates EVERYONE except me, my parents, my boyfriend and occasionally she’ll be okay with my boyfriend and I’s roommate (he lives here off and on as he is a Marine). She loves to go to the lake and car rides but I can’t take her to the dog park or Petsmart/Petco because she HATES people, I’m not even sure how she’d react with other dogs because she is so concentrated on the people. If someone gets within one foot of her she will growl and she WILL try to bite them. I don’t know what to do. Is this behavior correctable?

Chihuahua Owners…???
I have a Chihuahua who weighs 8 pounds!!! He should only weigh about 5 pounds. I do not over feed him and do not feed him table scraps EVER! My vet suggested cutting back his daily food from 1/3 of a cup to 1/4 of a cup! That just seems like so little and I am afraid he will be hungry but he needs to lose weight so he will live longer. How much do you other Chihuahua owners feed your dog?
To Tam-a-tranny or whatever your name is… 3lbs on a small dog is a lot of extra weight. Get your head out of your big fat butt and move along skank.
The vet said he was ok when he was 6.8lbs but ideally, for his bone structure he should weigh 5lbs to avoid having joint pain later on. Also, I met both of his parents when I bought him and Mom was 3lbs and Dad was 5lbs. I’m just going off of what my vet told me. Obviously I want my dog to live a long and healthy life.
Returning pet to petstore?
I bought a chihuahua from a local petstore TODAY, and brought it home as a surprise for my parents. Little did I know my mother started freaking out (she has extreme asthma) as well as my father. They absolutely would not allow me to keep and told me to return or find another owner.
I went back to the place literally 3 hours after I purchased it asking if they can do anything/give me a refund or anything at all. Their statement was "We are sorryw e cannot do anything legally."
I was very upset. I spent over a grand on a puppy I couldn’t keep.
I went home and pondered, isn’t there a new York State Law that states that any purchased pet can be returned within 3 days?
and also
I signed the contract/selling terms from the petstore. It stated refunds are only given to pups with genetic problems. No cash or credit refunds..
However I am under the age of 21 ( I am 20) and signed all these papers. Does this make the contract void?
If anyone has any ideas/input/advise please feel free to post
