Dog Training Is Easier Than You Think
If your Chihuahua is one of those innately obedient dogs, then congratulations, you don’t need these tips, but most dogs need a little of training, whether it’s to stop them from being overbearing with strangers or ripping up the upholstery. Use these tips to transform your pet into a happy and well-adjusted furry friend.
Shy dogs benefit from re-socializing. Oftentimes, dogs have behavioral incidents with certain situations, certain people or other dogs, that go unnoticed by us. We might not realize, but these interactions have given our dogs a sour taste about these circumstances. Re-socializing your dog to the stimuli he’s upset by, can help him overcome his anxiety.
When training a Chihuahua, the first and most important thing that you train your dog is to respect you and your family. If they feel that they can get away with disrespecting you, they will ultimately be impossible to train. You must start here and move on to other habits and tricks next.
Make your pet take your commands seriously. Do what you can to enforce commands that you give so that you don’t have to repeat them over and over. Don’t allow your dog to ignore a command you make. If you’re not showing that you’re serious about enforcing commands, don’t give any.
If you have gotten a Chihuahua dog or puppy and you have crate trained them you should always try not to keep them in there for more than four or five hours at a time unless it’s overnight or it’s just a once-in-awhile thing. If you have to have them in the crate for longer periods of time, a dog probably wasn’t the best option for you.
While training your Chihuahua, do not forget to have fun. It is important that your dog knows you can still have fun with him by playing with his toys. Keep up games you used to play before getting serious about training. Play time is a great stress reliever for both dog and owner!
Keep some of your dog’s favorite treats with you when you are training him to obey a new command. Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement. When you have his treat on hand, you can reward him as soon as he successfully obeys this new command. Before long, he will be able to respond to this command efficiently.
Make sure that your pooch is obeying commands. If Spot is ignoring you when you tell him to sit, do not give up. Follow-through until you get the action that you expect. If you are going to give up without getting the action that you requested, don’t bother giving the command in the first place.
Always use your dog’s name when issuing commands. When training your dog, it is important to be able to get and maintain their attention. Using your dog’s name when giving a command will make them focus. Use your dog’s name often. Get them used to both hearing and responding to it.
To prevent your dog from chewing, you should apply a smelly substance on objects that your dog is not supposed to chew. Buy some chew toys for your dog: some dogs chew because they are going through teething, and some use chewing as a way of releasing stress caused by loneliness.
Does your dog like to run at the sign of an open door? If so, you need to exercise preventative measures. You may want to install a security gate that will block him. Then you need to start training your dog to sit and stay by the front door. Once your dog can successfully do this, have him practice sitting there when the door is ajar. After he gets good at this, allow him to sit at the door with it open and off of his leash.
Even if your dog is extremely unruly at the moment, do not despair. Most dogs can be trained with a proper technique and a little perseverance. Make use of the tips you just read to minimize the hardship involved in training your dog while maximizing the results at the same time.
